Personal Best: Rebecca Sowden

Women’s Sport Director at WeAreFearless,
Founder of Team Heroine

Best pitch presenter you’ve ever seen:

Not a pitch, but the best speaker I’ve seen was Julie Uhrman, President & Founder of Angel City. Her conviction, passion and intellect showed exactly why Angel City is where it is today.

Best sports marketing campaign (that wasn’t yours):

DANZ – We All Rise With More Eyes.
- From securing global distribution rights to putting them on YouTube for free, partnering with Female Quotient for a research study on Visibility and launching with their emotive and powerful video ‘We All Rise With More Eyes’ this one is a clear winner!

Best agency (that isn’t yours):

Augusto founded in New Zealand (global presence), they’re world-class producers of sport & entertainment content including the likes of Adidas, All Blacks and Black Ferns.

Best young industry talent:

I’ve been enjoying seeing England Roses prop, Shaunagh Brown successfully taking her career off the field into the industry as both a writer, activist & film star helping drive the women’s game forward.

Best sporting event attended:

A 1-all draw between the final of Women’s Euros at Wembley watching England beat Germany in the final stages & the Redbull Cliff Diving off Copenhagen’s Opera House.

Best sporting event on TV:

WNBA – it’s entertaining, has high production values and offers a great viewing experience with world-class on-court action!

Best brand ambassador:

Alex Morgan, not only an incredible soccer player but a mum who has come back to play her best soccer yet (golden boot for NWSL this season). She was a key driver in the fight for the US Equal pay. She produces slick and authentic brand content and has 27 brand partners to boost - the most of any female athlete.

Best industry event or conference:

Equality Summit organised by the brilliant Maggie Murphy (below), Laura Youngson and Erin Blakenship from Equal Playing Field. It was intimate, interactive and focused on action with some of the best minds in women’s sport present.
SXSW is on my must-do list!

Best film containing a scene depicting the sports business:

Netflix Untold: And1 – not just a scene but a whole episode on the intertwined nature of sports & culture and how those brands that crack this best have the most chance at success as did basketball sneaker And1 who took on Nike with their street ball athletes and brand culture.

Best book recommendation:

Strategy is your words by Mark Pollard and of course Sue Anstisse: Game On

Best bar or pub:

Hong Kong Ritz rooftop bar, Ozone – highest bar in the world with a view of the magnificent HK skyline and nightly light show.

Best restaurant:

Depot in Auckland, New Zealand at the bottom of the Sky Tower – if you go to FIFA Women’s World Cup or are there now for Rugby World Cup, make sure you go!

Best holiday resort:

Hoi An, Vietnam – amazing food, people, culture, sights and sounds!

Best box set:

House of Cards

Best influence on your career:

My colleagues who get my back, boost my confidence and are there for support when I need it.

Best dinner companions (min 4, max 6):

Billie Jean-King, Alexis O’Hanian, Walt Disney, Serena Williams, Scott Galloway, Megan Rapinoe.

Best job in the sports biz:

Angel City FC – Head of Commercial

Giving up on my sport media start-up that enabled fans to share the best sport’s moments in real-time.
