SIMON BANOUB

VP Marketing, Sportlogiq

Best pitch presenter you’ve ever seen:

Not so much a pitch presenter as such but I’ve always enjoyed watching a guy called Doug Kessler from Velocity on the B2b marketing speaking circuit.  Swears a lot.

Best sports marketing campaign (that wasn’t yours):

This Girl Can by Sport England

Best agency (that isn’t yours):

LiveWire  - top tier in everything but profile really. Behind a lot of really great work for big clients across multiple sports, and lovely people too.

Best young industry talent:

Keep an eye on Michael Clarkson from Catapult Sports.

Best sporting event attended:

Every Saturday morning, parkrun

Best sporting event on TV:

The Ryder Cup. Delivers every single time.

Best brand ambassador:

Paul Sinton-Hewitt, the parkrun founder.  Not a brand ambassador in the classic sense but someone who embodies that brand in everything he says and does.

Best industry event or conference:

A boring answer, but the BT Sport Industry Awards always delivers.

Best film containing a scene depicting the sports business:

Given that it gave the sports data industry its Hollywood movie, I’ll have to say Moneyball

Best book recommendation:

Pitch Invasion - Adidas, Puma and the Making of Modern Sport by Barbara Smit

Best bar or pub: Mojo in Leeds

Best restaurant: One that’s stuck in my mind recently was a place called Catch in the meatpacking district of New York. I had a dessert there that I was thinking about for weeks after.

Best holiday resort:Anywhere where there is a coral reef, scuba diving and lots of sharks.

Best box set:By a million miles, The West Wing.

Best dinner companions (min 4, max 6):

Aaron Sorkin, David Attenborough, Bryan Robson and Boro left back George Friend.  A good conversation that puts right the following wrongs: playing 2 holding midfielders at home to Rotherham, getting relegated when you have the best player in the world in your team, why there hasn’t been another season of The Newsroom and the impending climate-led apocalypse.

Best influence on your career:There have been a few, but I’d have to say Aidan Cooney, founder of Opta.  Exactly the leader I needed at a very important time in my career.

Best job in the sports biz:

One of the big digital or content jobs with an annual or bi-annual event, where you can strategize about adding cool new stuff, and forming cool new partnerships in the gaps between the tournaments.  Also, I assume you get tickets.  If you don’t get tickets, I’m changing my answer.

Best professional regret:

Not somehow blagging a job of any sort around London 2012

Best skill you most covet:

It’s not really a skill, but I’d like to care less about what people think of me.

Best trait you admire in others:

Patience. Something I’m not overly blessed with.

Best overrated virtue: HUSTLE (#hustle)

Best ambition:

To be calm, happy, and a good example to my two boys - regardless of how that happens career wise.
